About This Item

London: R. Ackermann, 1841. Aquatint, printed in colours and finished by hand, by J. Harris. Expertly restored, re-backed. A fine equestrian portrait of the winner of The Derby at Epsom in 1841: Hancock's "painting of racehorses... are excellent. The prints made from such pictures... are extremely fine" (Charles Lane).

In the 1830s and and early 1840s Charles Hancock's "paintings of horses came to the attention of the proprietor of The Sporting Magazine... and, more importantly, to Rudolph Ackermann in Regent Street. Hancock succeeded John Ferneley in supplying paintings of Derby and St Leger winners to Ackermann who was publishing prints of these classic racehorses in competition with S. & J. Fuller at the time. he became a well established animal and portrait painter... His paintings of racehorses, which bear comparison with those by his contemporary J.F. Herring, are excellent. The prints made from such pictures... are extremely fine". (Charles Lane British Racing Prints pp.113-114).

Lane British Racing Prints p.114; Mellon British Sporting and Animal Prints p.87.
