The trial of Steinie Morrison was,in its day,a cause celebre, and has been the subject of controversy ever since.Court room proceedings were enlivened by the notable eccentricity of counsel - there was drama within drama - and in his summing-up Mr Justice Darling showed his belief that there was insufficient evidence for conviction. But the jury found Morrison guilty - guilty of the gruesome murder of Leon Beron on Clapham Common,in the earliest hours of New Year's Day,1911 - and but for the clemency of Winston Churchill, then Home Secretary,he would have been hanged. Morrison, however, reduced his sentence of life imprisonment by starving himself to death some ten years later. The case itself was of absorbing interest, the trial alternated between dramatic intensity and wild farce, and throughout England there was a dark suspicion that the murder of Leon Beron was in some way connected with two violent crimes that had deeply alarmed the public mind: the Houndsditch Murders before Christmas, the Siege of Sidney Street in January. Were foreign anarchists on the rampage? So it was feared, and anti-foreign,anti-semitic feeling swept London. Against that background Eric Linklater retells the whole story, makes clear his own belief that Morrison was not the murderer. He fills a crowded canvas with vivid detail and a cast of characters ranging from an invisible Peter the Painter to the celebrated Detective Inspector Wensley, from the East End harlots to Mr Justice Darling in all his urbanity. Since April 2013,and again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering its prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered its qualifying compensation rates too!
