A novel in the "Strangers and Brothers" series, which is a sequence of eleven novels written between 1940 and 1970 dealing with political and personal integrity and the exercising of power, narrated by the character Lewis Eliot and following his life and career, from an English provincial town, to London lawyer, Cambridge don, wartime service at Whitehall, senior civil servant to retirement. This novel is one of high politics dealing with the effort by an English MP to take Great Britain out of the nuclear arms race in the 1950s. The book is bound in blue cloth with black and gilt spine panel, gilt titled and decorated. Clean and unmarked with faded strips along top and bottom edges. Corners and edges rubbed, slight scuffing of corners.Tight, solid book. Internals very clean, no marks except former owner name on endpaper, no tears. White jacket is worn, lightly smudged, no marks, with edge tears, chipping. 403 pages. 8.5 x 5.75 inches. 1964, Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, New York, USA
