About This Item

Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1936. Duodecimo (19 x 12.5 cm), 261 pages, Index. FIRST EDITION. A semi-autobiographical novel and cookbook, describing the author's life growing up on a farm in late-nineteenth century Michigan. Inserted into the narrative are recipes for a variety of soups, roast dinners, breads, biscuits, cakes, and other staples of rural American cuisine. Della Lutes (1872-1942) was a writer and editor; she worked for a variety of magazines directed towards housekeepers and homemakers. She won a National Book Award for The Country Kitchen. Internally clean and sound. Light foxing to the top of the book. In red and white gingham-style cloth; pasted-down title label has minor scuffing. Dust jacket has some edgewear, and some damp-staining. Generally very good. Free front endpaper has the signature of previous owner and a bookseller's ticket pasted down from "The Old Corner Book Store, Inc. Boston, Mass."
