Originally published in 1896, this book tells a story spanning three months time in the life of a small coastal town called Dunnett Landing in 19th Century Maine. A lone female visitor arrives and finds lodging with the widowed Mrs. Todd, the town's herbalist, who introduces the visitor to many of the town's inhabitants. The visitor's impressions of the people she meets starts out simply, then almost invisibly they crescendo into a deep, intense human portrait. Writing in 1925 on the subject of this exquisite short novel, Willa Cather called it a "Masterpiece." This handsomely designed re-typeset edition is prefaced by a portfolio of photographs of coastal Maine during the era portrayed in the story..

This was a life-changing read. It is as if it were written specifically for me. The journey was the most uplifting, intriguing, heartwarming, satisfying experience for an avid reader such as myself. The writer is a superb narrator with descriptions beyond compare and character-building skills such as I have never witnessed. Am now reading other authors with similar writing style, (Ruth Moore) as well as others by Jewett. Carol Sullivan
