About This Item
Sarah Orne Jewett (b. South Berwick, ME, 1849 - d. 1909) wrote with "cadences and color" of the idiom of the Mainers about whom she wrote "with such compassion and delicacy", from end flap. Writer Jewett was a contemporary of John Greenleaf Whittier, Henry James, and Willa Cather, who in 1925 named this work by Jewett as one of three American prose titles of enduring influence. This edition is Illustrated with Douglas Alvord's black-and-white pencil drawings, wonderfully rendered in "haunting serenity", modelled from real "Mainers". Alvord is based in Cushing ME. The other works named by Cather are "Scarlett Letter" and "Huckleberry Finn". Set in a small coastal town in Maine, the "Pointed Firs" sequence of intimate stories evoke the decline of coastal New England after America's Civil War. Volume is clean.
Reviews
This was a life-changing read. It is as if it were written specifically for me. The journey was the most uplifting, intriguing, heartwarming, satisfying experience for an avid reader such as myself. The writer is a superb narrator with descriptions beyond compare and character-building skills such as I have never witnessed. Am now reading other authors with similar writing style, (Ruth Moore) as well as others by Jewett. Carol Sullivan
