1907 A.H. Bullen first edition. 169 pages plus advertisements at the back.
Desmond McCarthy was a London critic, and associate of the Bloomsbury Group. The Royal Court Theatre, during the time described in the book, was a groundbreaking force in British drama. Under the management of John Verdenne and Harley Granville Barker, the theater mounted a long string of experimental productions. In addition, the Theatre functioned as a George Bernard Shaw Repertory Company. From 1904-07, six GBS plays premiered at the Court, including Man and Superman, Major Barbara, and Don Juan in Hell.
The unusual thing about the book are the signatures from 12 Edwardian Actors on two blank pages. I can decipher 8 sure signatures; Ellen O'Malley, Norman Page, Wilfred Shine, James Hearn, Agnes Thomas, Stanley LeSage, Katherine Stuart, and F. Cremlin. None of them are now household names, but back in the day, who knows?
There is a longer inscription on the front free endpaper. The book has been presented to Ellen O'Malley (a member of the Actors' troupe) "with Messrs Verdenne's and Barker's compliments". Signed copies of these books may have been distributed to several of the Actors.
Condition of the book is Good. The binding is straight and sound. Inside pages are complete, with occasional light foxing. The boards show some surface wear, and the spine fabric is sun lightened. The endpapers show discoloration from previously laid in items (newsprint, perhaps).
Please message me with any questions.

Description:
New York: Grove Press, 2003. First American Edition. Hardcover. As New. First Printing, in three volumes, of perhaps the playwright's crowning achievement, preceding the one-volume edition by four years. Small, slim 8vo: xii,[2],114; xii,[4],107,[1]; xiv,[2],120pp. Publisher's forest green, claret, and French blue cloth (respectively), spines stamped gilt, black end papers, without dust jackets (as issued); pictorial, paper-covered stiff board slipcase. A very smart production, As New (pristine). Baker & Wachs A29. Recipient of the 2007 Tony Award for Best Play. The title comes from a chapter in Avrahm Yarmolinsky's book Road to Revolution: A Century of Russian Radicalism (1959). "Historical figures again occupy the stage in Stoppard's The Coast of Utopia, three sequential "plays of ideas" set in Tzarist Russia, the trilogy exploring key issues of nineteenth-century European revolutionary thinking. . . . The attempt at engineering utopia is deemed a dangerous enterprise, . . . re-establishing a…

London: Ernest Benn, Limited, 1929. FIRST UK EDITION. 8vo, pp. xxi, [iii], 203, [1]. Original brown cloth, orange lettering to spine. Chip and wear to head of spine, bruising and wear to bottom extremities, blotching to lower board. Top edge dusty, fore-edge a little spotted. Feps lightly toned, pushing to bottom corner of a couple of early signatures, short closed tears to top edges of pp. 89-104, reaching 2cm at pp. 103-4, text unaffected. Else, pleasingly clean and tidy. Very good. Unusual in the trade, though fairly well represented in British and Irish research libraries. 'With an Introduction on the American Negro in Art' by Du Bose Heyward. Publication of the British edition of the Heywards' play (plus other international editions) coincided with an eleven-week European tour of Porgy in spring 1929. It opened without previews on 10 April at His Majesty's Theatre, London and closed on 1 June 1929. While British theatre-goers welcomed the Porgy cast, with the opening night apparently receiving 12…
