About This Item
London: J. Watson, 1824. Aquatint, printed in colours and finished by hand, by Fellowes (expertly repaired tears, one touching image area). A fine image of Lord Robert Ongley's favourite trotting horse.
William Fellowes (or Fellows) was a painter and engraver working between 1792 and 1825. Little is known of his life other than his work. The present engraving is after his own original, but most of his recorded work is after other artists such as Samuel J.E. Jones and Samuel Howitt. His output was limited, but to judge from the present fine image, it "is a pity that his contribution was so small for he really was in a class better than his contemporaries" (Charles Lane, Sporting Aquatints and their Engravers, p. 79).
