Description:
[no place]: [no publisher], [no date]. Very Good. Faux leather protective roll with three snap closures, containing one portrait on paper. The whole connected between two large (1 3/4 inch) dowel halves on one end. The salesman could add various portraits to the assemblage by separating the two half dowels, adding additional portraits, and screwing the assemblage together again. This example has a linen guard to protect the paper portrait as it is rolled and snapped shut. Leather roll is approx 17 inches wide and two foot long. Portrait in this case is of a distinguished man in a suit, shoulders up. Marked on the rear of this portrait (which is paper laid onto linen) is a stamp "Crayon" and various sizes and costs. Generally good condition, with some soiling to the faux leather, and minor creasing to the portrait. Large photographic prints were expensive and difficult to store and transport. This was one solution for photographers - a sample portrait that could be rolled up in a protective cover and…

[Photography] Erwin E. Smith. Cowboy Grave O. R. Range. [Bonham, Texas]: [Erwin Smith] [Circa 1920-47] 12 x 17 cm. Stamped on back; "Copyright by Erwin E. Smith, Bonham Texas." Written in pencil on back: "O Bury me not on the lone prairie. Cowboy grave O. R. Range – Ariz." Near fine.
Great image of a cowboy and his horse paying his respects at a grave on the range. Original Smith images with his stamp are uncommon on the market. "Growing up in Bonham, Texas, Erwin Smith knew he wanted to be a cowboy and an artist. The era of great trail drives was ending, and he was determined to document the open-range lifestyle before it disappeared completely. Smith gained experience by working on ranches and studying painting and sculpting at art schools in Chicago and Boston before he realized that the photographs he used as preliminary studies were works of art themselves. Between 1905 and the mid-1920s, he photographed ranch work and life in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, producing some of the best-known images of early 20th-century cowboy activities." – Amon Carter Museum.-

Description:
Against a stark horizon in a harsh climate, settlers in Nebraska everywhere erected monuments to their optimism. The buildings pictured in Dreams in Dry Places are not just famous landmarks like the State Capitol but also humble farmhouses, barns, grain elevators, courthouses, banks, churches, stores, and theaters. They represent every kind of architecture to be found in Nebraska--folk, high-style, commercial, residential, pioneer, and modern; the unexpected and the familiar, the poetic and the prosaic, good and bad. Caught by Roger Bruhn's camera, these structures always suggest the spiritual resources of their builders and inhabitants, who struggled for a livelihood on the Great Plains.Dreams in Dry Places has an architecture of its own, beginning and ending with images of the natural landscape and in between revealing unexpected continuities among disparate structures and settings, juxtapositions of forms, and the vanities and vagaries of architectural style. Exterior and interior shots are…
