Hardcover, grey cloth with gold, guilt lettering. First edition of the Macmillan edition, first printing, fourth book in the series, second American translation, Constance Garnett. The first American edition to be published directly into English from the Russian, however. No dust jacket, as issued. Rubbing on both tail and headcap. Small tear on head cap hinge. Small stain on back board. Contained crack between the second and third pages of text, revealing gauze band on spine. Clean interior with no inscription. Faint evidence of erased pencil notation on pastedown. A very nice copy of arguably Dostoevsky's most famous novel. "Don't be overwise; fling yourself straight into life, without deliberation; don't be afraid-the flood will bear you to the bank and set you safe on your feet again." Crime and Punishment is a novel by Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky that was first published in the literary journal The Russian Messenger in twelve monthly installments in 1866. It was later published in a single volume. It is the second of Dostoevsky's full-length novels after he returned from his exile in Siberia, and the first great novel of his mature period.
