About This Item
Bridge Books, 2011. Hardcover. As New/As New. h/b 224 pages, condition is As New. The Crimean War of 1954-56 was the first of the 'modern' wars. The opening round at the Alma in September 1954, was a direct throwback to the Napoleonic campaigns of fifty years earlier, whereas the siege of Sevastopol was a foretaste of the Great War more than sixty years later. Crimean Letters is based upon the correspondence of Lieutenant William Allan, a young Scottish officer serving with the 41st (The Welsh) Regiment throughout the campaign. They provide an interesting insight into the experiences of the officers, both in action and in their day-to-day lives, in what became a thoroughly unpleasant war as those around them suffered from the actions of the enemy, the ravages of ill-health and the incompetence of those in authority. An interesting and valuable appendix to this book is a definite list of all the men who served in the Crimean campaign with the 41st Regiment.
