About This Item

London: Robert Jennings, 1824. First edition. Hinges tender, and some light wear to bindings, some intermittent spotting, but generally a very handsome and well-preserved set. Three volumes, 4to (373 x 268 mm). 80 engraved plates, of which 70 are hand-colored, with historiated hand-colored initials for each chapter throughout. Contemporary grey calf, blind-tooled borders, spines with gilt bands and red leather lettering-pieces, all edges gilt. Provenance: Jasper Hall (bookplate); Henry J. B. Clements (bookplate, sold Sotheby's 1 November 1966, lot 975). One of the first works to view the subject of ancient arms and armor from an historical perspective. "This most superb archeological work is animated with numerous novelties, curious and historical disquisitions, and brilliant and recondite learning... Plates as fine as the monuments of Westminster Abbey. Really and truly the work is admirably executed, and deserves every eulogy" (Edinburgh Review, quoted in Lowndes). Includes a glossary of military terms. Brunet III, 1692; Lowndes IV, 1541.
