About This Item
Modena: Il Bulino, Edizione Darte. Very Good with no dust jacket. 2004. Limited Edition. Leather. 8886251637 . Limited edition of 950, of which this is number 404 (Italian no. 16) 46 pages (23 leaves) Quarto, 20 cm x 29 cm bound in red leather, red leather box (23 cm x 30 cm) , booklet with commentary translated into Italian by Wolfgang Irtenkauf, director of the Baden-Wurttemberg Library. Box has raised bands to the spine and gilt; book has blind ruling. Text is facsimile of the original at the Staadtsbibliothek, Berlin, Ms. Germ. Fol. 62323 full page illuminations in colors and gold. The artist of the miniatures is not known, although it is very likely that they were produced by someone working on the famous German manuscripts known as the Codex Manesse, written between 1304-1340. The images show lively and colourful biblical scenes, as well as scenes filled with knights, nobles and ladies in medieval attire. The facsimile is designed to look as much like the original document as possible, including flaws, stains, library marks, etc. The quality is high and the book is quite beautiful. Condition is VG to NF. The box has a few small scuffs, the binding on the book has a few small rubs and scuffs, otherwise in very nice condition. Rudolf von Ems (c. 1200 1254) was a Middle High German narrative poet. He was a knight in the service of the Counts of Montfort and is thought to have died while accompanying King Conrad IV on his advance into Italy. The Chronicle of the World (Weltchronik) is Rudolf's last work, dedicated to King Conrad IV. It narrates, as an addition to the Bible, the Historia scholastica of Petrus Comestor and the Pantheon of Godfrey of Viterbo, the history of the world from the creation up to the death of King Solomon, with references to contemporary events. It is considered to be one of the first histories written in German. Der Stricker is the pseudonym of a 13th-century Middle High German itinerant poet whose real name has been lost to history. His name, which means "The Knitter," may indicate he was a commoner. Der Stricker's oeuvre includes the epic Karl (Charlemagne or Carlomagno) a German adaptation of the Song of Roland, Der Stricker was well known to later poets, being mentioned and commended by Rudolf von Ems, so it is appropriate that these two manuscripts appear together. In fact, the fragments of the two manuscripts became known in 1826 when they were acquired together by a German poet and collector, August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben, before they went to the Library. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 46 pages .
