About This Item
Bognor Regis and London: John Crowther, 1945. 1st. hardback. Very good, missing d/j, green clothbound covers, green cover/spine titling; text block firm (but front gutter loosening); pages unmarked and crisp (wartime papers). Provenance: Tenniel Evans, actor and clergyman (neat inscription on ffep). 12mo (190 x 130 / 7_"" x 5""). Radford's English etymological dictionary of the 1940s, published in the final year of World War II under wartime production restrictions and with a number of sharply topical references scattered throughout. Collection of word and phrase origins for the reader ""of ordinary means,"" with contemporary commentary of the war included: under ""Aryan,"" the reader is reminded that Hitler's association of this term with the German people is an error; under ""Monroe Doctrine,"" that ""its terms were raised as late as 1940 as an argument why the U.S.A. should take no part in the war."" Briefer than many slang dictionaries through deliberate selectivity, Radford includes ""Only those words associated with some definite custom, or arising out of corrupted words of a past age, which present light on customs and conditions"".
