Map illustrated endpapers; U.S. Naval Institute bookplate on front free endpaper. Pages and edges are clean. Illustrated with photographs. 345 pages with index. Clean beautifully illustrated dust jacket has one-inch closed tear at top spine corner, small v-shaped chip at top rear panel edge; enclosed in new archival quality removable mylar cover. True story of a sailing ship that was quickly commissioned as a U.S. Navy ship in 1941. Her mission, on direct instructions from F. D. Roosevelt, was to put to sea on a "defensive information patrol." Admiral Tolley, then Lanikai's commanding officer, surmised her real mission was to provoke the Japanese to sink her, thus triggering U.S. entry into World War II..
