On 5 December 1941, Lanikai was quickly commissioned as a U.S. Navy ship. Her mission, on direct instructions from President Franklin D. Roosevelt, was to put to sea on a 'defensive information patrol.' Admiral Tolley, then Lanikai's commanding officer, surmised her real mission was to provoke the Japanese to sink her, thus triggering U.S. entry into World War II." Rear flap of dj tape repair..
