About This Item

St. Paul: The Minnesota Historical Society, 1934 WYSIWYG pricing--no added shipping charge for standard shipping within USA. Brown cloth, gold titles on spine, xi, 327 pp, 4 ff b & w photo plates, fold-out facsimiles of The St. Cloud Visiter and The St. Cloud Democrat. Spine faded, else fine. Founder and editor of the two papers mentioned, Mrs. Swisshelm was both a feminist and an anti-slavery crusader. The Democrat was really just the Visiter under a new name, and an ironic one at that. This was of a piece with the editor's sarcastic and ironic style when dealing with her political enemies. From the preface by Theodore C. Blegen: "Interesting as is the author's portrayal of her own mind, the primary historical value of the letters lies in their picture of the times--the descriptions of places, the characterizations of people, the accounts of frontier travel, the comments on pioneer journalism, the reflections of public opinion, and the echoing of current, sometimes baseless, gossip." Shipping weight 2 lbs. (International 1 lb., 12 oz.). . VG+/No dj. 20½ X 13½ cm.
