About This Item

New York, NY 10010, U.S.A.: Pantheon, 2009. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Beginning with a story of young people adrift in the college town of Ann Arbor on the cusp of the Reagan era and ending with the complex quest of a middle-aged woman to adopt a child in Addis Ababa, Gaitskill works across a broad backdrop of American life and brilliantly delivers her signature pleasures: prose as taut as a high-tension line, a supreme command of the interior landscape, and characters as real as the secret faces that peer back at us from the mirror. Each story is charged with her powerful, original language and the dramatic engagement of the intelligent mind with the craving body - or the intelligent body with the craving mind - that is characteristic of Gaitskill's fiction. Her settings are a surprising mix of real and surreal: in the urban fairy tale "Mirror Ball" a young man steals a girl's soul during a one-night stand, while in the stunning "The Arms and Legs of the Lake" the fallout of the Iraq War becomes painfully immediate for a group of characters who collide by chance on a train going up the Hudson River. As spirited and intense as the now-classicBAD BEHAVIOR, DON'T CRY shows us how our social conscience has evolved while basic truths - "the crude cinder blocks of male and female down in the basement, holding up the house," as one character puts it - remain unchanged. Author of VERONICA and BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO. Fine, first edition, first printing, in fine, mylar-protected dust jacket. [Not remainder-marked or price-clipped] L135

About Joe Staats, Bookseller

Modern Literature, Mysteries, and More!
We specialize in collectible, contemporary signed first editions. First edition means the first printing. (Later printings of the first edition are typically not printed on acid-free paper, and should be avoided by collectors.) Signatures are obtained by us in person. Inscribed books sold by us may contain a line, a phrase, or a sketch that the author has chosen to add. Our signed books are not dedicated to anybody in particular (not to your grandmother, your Aunt Gladys, your ex-lover or your former cellmate), except in the rare case of a presentation copy from an author to a noteworthy person. All our books are hardcover, unless the book is an Advance Reading Copy, Uncorrected Proof, or PBO. You can expect that the books we send you will be as described, and in a physical condition worthy of the author’s having signed them. We do not sell remainder-marked books, signed or otherwise
