About This Item

New Orleans [1922], Hansell. Red cloth, covers & spine gold stamped titles, very bright, clean & solid, contents pristine, firmly bound 13 x 25 cm., mylar dust jacket, * * * SECOND EDITION * * * . *** **** *** . . ONE OF HEARN'S RAREST & MOST ICONIC EARLY BOOKS . . . ALTHOUGH HE DID NOT HAVE HIS NAME ON THE TITLE PAGE . . . PER PERKINS HEARN IS INDEED THE AUTHOR . . . THE HIGHLY OBSCURE SECOND EDITION [1922] . . . A REPRINT OF THE NEW ORLEANS 1885 FIRST EDITION . * This is one of the RAREST of all Hearn titles. It is seldom found, and remains one of the most difficult to find in the original 1885 edition. When found it has been well used by cooks and has evidence of chef & kitchen use. . *** The title page does not show Hearn's name however in fact this is his work, per Perkins below. . *** An exceptionally RARE LAFCADIO HEARN TREASURE, reflecting his "AMERICAN DAYS" in New Orleans, illustrating his Creole fascination. . *** Color photos are posted to our website. . *** BINDING & CONDITION: . There are two variants to this title, both are in red cloth, with different cover paste-on illustrations, see numbers 1 & 2 below for general details. . Generic: bound in full cloth, . 1. Perkins states of the SECOND EDITION [1922]: "Issued in red cloth, edges trimmed. Front cover lettered in gold...paper label with illustration in color of Creole cook, label is outlined in single rule border in gold [on front cover]. . This was published in February 1922 by F.F. Hansell & Bro. Ltd." The cover label is 7 x 13 cm, and shows a Creole lady cook in full color. . 2. Perkins does NOT mention the second printing [1922] in a variant binding to the above. This is bound in full dark red cloth, with a stick-on paper illustration reading: "LA CUISINE CREOLE. A COLLECTION OF CULINARY RECIPES. F.F. Hansell & Bro. Ltd. Publishers, New Orleans." . This large label is yellow with black printing and shows a Creole woman cook to her left is a black and stove, and a window in the background. This label is 7.5 x 10.8 cm. . 2. Again Perkins does NOT mention this a different variation from the above. Bound in full red cloth, with gold cover & spine titles. . This is entirely different from the above citation in Perkins. Somehow he missed this edition. The contents, pagination are exactly the same as the above other editions . * SPECIFIC COPY NOTES: . We tend to be a bit overly critical, of condition remarks. Generally all copies are above the average. . Copy 1 is brilliant, exceptionally clean and bright, contents likewise. See above this is variant 1. Illustrated on our website as cover.jpg, book number 40020301. . Copy 2 is clean & solid, a bit darker shade of red, a tiny spot on front upper right corner, front cover color illustration a bit of the usual minor scuffing, else contents brilliantly clean. . Copy 3 is variant 2 above in dark red cloth, with a different illustration on the front cover, see spine.jpg illustrated on our website as book number 40020303 contents is the same as above others, brilliantly clean. . Copy 4 the full red cloth edition, NO color illustration. This is not cited in Perkins. This is in a clear Mylar dust jacket, a superbly clean example, no issues. . Copy 5 is about the same book as #4 above, in full red cloth, No color illustration. This copy has five small whitish spots on the lower cover, three gently & minor bumped corners, edges a bit minor spotted, else contents is very bright, clean, no issues. The book is firmly bound & solid. Above the average example. . NOTE about copy 4 & 5 above. On the bottom of page 13 it states: "2-Jan.22." meaning January 2, 1922. On the verso of the title pages is: "Copyright 1885." Followed by a comment at the very bottom of that page: "Hammond Press W.B. Conkey Company Chicago." . Perkins clearly states the publication date of this 1922 edition is February 1922. The printer clearly printed the book just prior to Perkins "published date." As we all know there is always a lag between printing vs. publishing date or 'copyright date' when registered. Others have claimed these 1922 editions to be a 'third' edition with is an incorrect assumption. There is only the second edition printed in 1922, no other variant dates are viable, or simply misinterpretation. . *** BIBLIOGRAPHY: . P.D. & Ione Perkins: LAFCADIO HEARN A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF HIS WRITINGS: p.11. * BAL 7913 . * .
