THE LEGENDARY FIRST EDITION 1885 . . . ONE OF HEARN'S RAREST & MOST ICONIC NEW ORLEANS BOOKS . . . BY [LAFCADIO HEARN] WHO'S S NAME IS NOT ON THE TITLE PAGE . . . PER PERKINS: HEARN IS INDEED THE AUTHOR . . . THE EXTREMELY RARE FIRST EDITION FIRST ISSUE . . . THE PUBLISHER'S SIGNED, DATED PRESENTATION COPY . * This is one Hearn’s most elusive of all Hearn early, unsigned titles. Seldom found, and remains one of the most difficult to find in the original 1885 edition. . When found it has typically been well used by cooks and has evidence of chef & kitchen use. This copy is not of that ilk, but is by and large a clean & nice example. . *** The title page does not show Hearn's name however in fact this is his work, per Perkins below. . *** An exceptionally RARE LAFCADIO HEARN TREASURE, reflecting his "AMERICAN DAYS" in New Orleans, illustrating his Creole fascination. . *** THE BINDING VARIANTS & POINTS: . Per Perkins, this title was issued in pictorial cloth of various colors: brown, blue & olive. The front pictorial cover shows gold & black tureen on a table with a crab to the right, and a lobster below crawling up the table cloth... Illustrated in gold & black, the spine is without lettering. The first letter of each word on the cover is in gold, the balance in black. . There are two variant issues of the FIRST EDITION: per the introduction page, there is a misspelling of the word Brulot with umlaut above the 'u' on it is incorrect. Correct is with an accent mark above the 'u' indicating the FIRST ISSUE, with the introduction being one and one-half pages. The size is 14.5 x 19.5 cm. . *** BINDING VARIANTS & POINTS: . The copy we herein offer now is below: The second issue has the umlaut over 'u' and the introduction is one page long. . *** Color photos are posted to our website. . *** CONDITION: This gem is solidly bound in the original publisher's brown pictorial cloth. . The gold & black titles on front cover are vivid and solid. There is some typical scuffing, color difference to the covers & spine. The contents are clean and without stain, two signatures are a bit misaligned but solid, . As expected of a book 135+ years old, there is some of the usual signs of wear to the corners, edges, spine head & tail, a small wrinkle to the upper spine, some minor mottling & spotting to the covers. We tend to be over critical, it is nicely presented and far and above the average example. All in all a nice plus copy. . . *** CONDITION: Bound in the publisher's original blue pictorial cloth, contained in a Mylar dust jacket. Others are bound in brown cloth. .
