Olive brown silk binding with attractive decorative design and lettering in gilt. 320 pp., 8 pp. advertising. Matilda Betham-Edwards (1836-1919) wrote dozens of novels, children's books and books about France. After her father's death in 1864 she moved to London and became a prominent member of the London literary world; her friends included George Eliot, Coventry Patmore, and Sarah Grand. She received honors and awards from both the British and French governments. Contemporary ownership signature on half-title; lacking ffep; rear endpapers rubbed, boards skewed. Good condition.
