About This Item
London : David Bogue, 1855. First edition. The final realisation of an idea first hatched in 1828 - an encyclopaedic dictionary of London - from the Adelphi to the Zoological Gardens - mixing the "entertaining and anecdotic" with "social statistics and other Great Facts". Compiled by John Timbs F.S.A., author, journalist and antiquary. As "agreeable a book as you could wish to meet with. There is so much out-of-the-way reading in it - such apt introduction of personal experience" (The Examiner, 5th May 1855). Foolscap 8vo (18cm). viii,800 + 32pp advertisements dated July 1857. Portrait frontispiece. Original publisher's cloth by Leighton, Son & Hodge, with their ticket; lightly sunned; slight spine crease; front free endpaper neatly excised, but overall a very good copy. Small contemporary booksellers' label of Mann Nephews of Cornhill.
