About This Item

Koln:: Taschen,, 2005.. First Hardcover Trade Printing. A Fine tight copy in a Fine bright dust jacket. This is the hardcover reissue of the Paperback Original of this Thompson classic of Gonzo journalism set to Hawaiian slack-key. The Curse of Lono is to Hawaii what Fear and Loathing was to Las Vegas: the crazy tales of a journalist's "coverage" of a news event that ends up being a wild ride to the dark side of Americana. Originally published in 1983, Curse features all of the zany, hallucinogenic wordplay and feral artwork for which the Hunter S. Thompson/Ralph Steadman duo became known and loved.

Synopsis

The Curse of Lono is a gonzo-lite memoir of Hunter S. Thompson visiting the Kona coast of Hawaii during the early 1980's. Thompson and Steadman were there to cover the Hawaiian Marathon for Running magazine, but most of the book is dedicated to the month-long vacation afterwards, typhoons, and drunken deep-sea fishing for marlin. Interspersed with the narrative are excerpts from  The Last Voyages of Captain James Cook , whom the Hawaiian natives thought was their reincarnated god, Lono when he landed on their shores. Ralph Steadman, Illustrator
