A first printing of the Barnes & Noble reprint edition of a collection of correspondence between General George Armstrong Custer and his wife Elizabeth Bacon. The letters serve as a revealing history of their life stories. Successful right out of the US Miliary Academy in the Civil War, Custer went on to fight in the Indian Wars of the American West. Letters edited and organized by Marguerite Merington. With a section of plates bearing black & white photos of people and scenes described in the book. This work originally published by The Devin-Adair Company in 1950. --- In black paper-covered boards backed in black cloth, with gilt-stamped spine titling. Volume wrapped in dust jacket with Alexander Lawrie painted portrait of Custer to front panel. --- A clean, tightly-bound, bright copy lacking obvious damages. Unclipped, unpriced jacket also in great shape; wrapped in removable archival mylar protector (which has some rubbing).; Octavo - 8 to 9 in. tall; xii, 339 pages .
