The English chemist William Thomas Brande (1788-1866) first studied medicine before being drawn to chemistry after meeting Humphry Davy. He first published an influential article on the measurement of alcohol in fermented drinks, including wine, cider and ale in 1811. Brande was the author of a "Manual of Chemistry" (1819) and a "Manual of Pharmacy" (1825). He was appointed professor of chemistry to the Apothecaries's Society in 1812. In lieu of Humphry Davy, he delivered a series of lectures before the Board of Agriculture and, when Humphry Davy stepped down the following year, he succeeded him as chair of chemistry at the Royal Institution. Michael Faraday assisted him when he lectured at the Royal Institution.
