Contemporary three-quarter calf over pebbled plum cloth boards with gilt lettering on yellow and black labels of spine, blind-stamped tooling; raised bands. Marbled edges and endpapers. Frontispiece engravings in both volumes, with tissue guards. Dedicated to Alexander von Humboldt this encyclopedia of modern travel is profusely illustrated with 12 plates of engravings, plus frontispieces, thirteen maps, eleven of them full page, and forty-two in-text engravings. Contains travel summaries of famous journeys by Alexander von Humboldt, Mungo Park, Lewis & Clarke, Moffat, and many others. Contains index and fourteen pages of publisher's advertisements at rear. Binding with light wear along edges, small chips, light cracks of joint at head of spine, volume two. Light foxing of first and last few pages. Binding in overall good, interior in very good+ condition.
