About This Item

UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.FINE-/FINE-.Owner name+date (1980) but no price-clip to dw/dj - absence of publisher's price - generally believed to be export copies, issued before UK trade issues.Bright, crisp, clean, glossy laminated, montage'd subject's 2 monochrome photographs to front panel of dw/dj - with unevenly faded yellow, white and pale lilac letters; lettering to spine/backstrip sunned+faded - as is the spine itself, rear panel as a white background with brown lettered critic's review; with negligible shelf-wear,bumping,creasing to edges and corners – no nicks, tears or splits present.Top edges lightly toned with minimal sporadic foxing/spotting,fore-edges brighter and cleaner without foxing; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound – no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners – near pristine, appears unread, apart from my own collation.Publisher's bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered,original,plain black cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked gilt lettered spine/backstrip and clean plain white sets of endpapers - owner inscrptn excepted.UK, 8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,ix-xviiipp+1-420pp [paginated] includes author's foreword, acknowledgements, contents list/table,IX (9) chapters and an Epilogue - each chapter with an unpaginated,b/w illustrated headpiece to chapter's separator pages' with a b/w photograph to its reverse, with the exception of the first chapter which has no photograph,8pp [unpaginated] contemporary auto+biographical photographs in 1 block, between pp204/5pp,abbreviations,Notes and an Index; plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages, dedication, and a D. H. Lawrence reproduced letter [to Lady Ottoline Morrell,1915]. Visually the exterior appearance is still acceptable, and even internally, the book is in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation. It is only the exterior fault described that prevents a slightly higher grading for the dw/dj.
In 'D. H. Lawrence's Nightmare',Paul Delany,a distinguished Lawrence scholar, presents the most complete and intinate portrait to date (then 1979) of the turmoil of an entir generation of writers during the Great War.He focuses on Lawrence trapped against his will in England in this tormented period which brought his physical and emotional health to the verge of a breakdown yet culminated in the publication of his masterpiece,'Women in Love.' In this detailed and masterly study Professor Delany analyses the influence on this novel of the growing horror of the war, showing how Lawrence's affirmation that life and truth are to be found only in intense personal relationships resulted from an effort to break free of his devouring mother country.Special attention is paid to his troubled relationship with Russell, his pacifism and desperate and ultimately successful struggle to avoid conscription.
The author has searched intensively through hundreds of sources - Lawrence's letters,Freida's memoirs, the Bertrand Russell archives and diaries, journals and letters both published and unpublished,of Lady Ottoline Morrell,Lady Cynthia Asquith,Katherine Mansfield,John Maynard Keynes - to produce this well documented and original study.
