The Earl of Ilchester's bookplate, with motto 'faire sans dire' ('to do without speaking') to front pastedown. Covers heavily rubbed and worn, leather dry. Joints and hinges heavily rubbed; boards remain attached with five cords, but rear board has only four cords intact. A few contemp. notes to front endpapers, else textblock is clean and bright.. 8vo. 4.75 x 7.75 in. [xx], 822 pp. + indexes & errata. Brown calf, all edges marbled, five raised bands, with leather spine lable titled and decorated in gilt. Engraved frontis. Commentary, in Latin and Greek, running in two columns. From the library of Univ. of Dallas Classics Professor Karl Maurer, but unmarked by him. This book was published by notable cartographer JOAN BLAEV a year before his printing house was destroyed by a fire and two years before he died. A very serviceable textblock, in very dry calf. Schweiger II.1.22.
