About This Item
Based on Bradbury's 1957 novel, composer William Goldenberg and lyricist Larry Alexander conceived of a musical adaptation in 1967, which was met with enthusiastic approval by Bradbury, who helped develop the show. Originally performed for several performances in April 1967 as part of the Lincoln Center Workshop, Bradbury continued to adjust and amend the musical with new lyrics and score over the next two decades, including a 1988 version scored by composer Jimmy Webb. Goldenberg and Alexander would withdraw their score from a 1981 Los Angeles production after Bradbury refused to consider re-examining the musical book following criticism from Broadway producer Stuart Ostrow.
Bradbury's classic nostalgic reverie of life in the fictional small American town of Green Town, Illinois in 1928, which was based upon Bradbury's childhood home and experiences in Waukegan, Illinois.
