About This Item
Melbourne: Melbourne University Press (MUP), 1984. Hardback octavo, dustjacket, very good condition (in very good dustjacket), black & white photos, colour portrait frontispiece, non-author written dedication front endpaper. 282 pp. Daniel Mannix was the controversial conservative Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne. He was a strong supporter of Valera back in Ireland, and also of anti-conscription. He long fought communist influences in the Australian Labor Party (ALP), and was prominent in the split to create the Democratic Labor Party (DLP). Conservative Irish-Catholic colleague B. A. Santamaria recounts the story of his trials and tribulations during his near century of life. Draws out the many facets of his personality - above all, an irrepressible sense of humour and compassion for his fellows.
