Scholastic, New York, 2009, 2009. Paperback. Very Good. Squarish octavo, softcover, near fine in blue pictorial wraps. Scarce book. 69 pp. including index. He came from modest beginnings, born in South Carolina in 1811 to free people of color. He was orphaned at age 9 and raised by a great aunt. Slavery ruled but he believed in education and wanted to make a difference in the world.
