Quarto, two volumes (bound as six), comprising xxxii, 512 pages (Divisions 1-3), and 513-530, xvi (last blank), 472, xvi (last blank), [2] (publisher's advertisements) pages (Divisions 4-6), with numerous illustrations plus a total of 62 full-page plates and 3 folding colour maps. Black-pictorial red cloth lettered in gilt; minor signs of use and age (spines sunned, a few corners bumped or lightly worn, edges darkened and a little foxed, with scattered foxing throughout); repairs to tears to the folding map in the first and last divisions; overall, an attractive set in very good condition. The first leaf in the first division (headed 'This leaf not to be bound with the Volume') contains a short printed note: 'Conditions of Publication. This edition, specially prepared for subscription only, will be completed in Twenty-two parts, at 2s. each, or in Six Divisions, cloth gilt, at 9s. each, and is not obtainable from the ordinary Booksellers'. The index and preliminaries to the first 'Volume' are bound in at the beginning of the fourth Division, and those to the second 'Volume' appear at the end of the sixth Division. [6 items].

Synopsis

In Darkest Africa (1890) is Henry M. Stanley’s own account of his last adventure on the African continent. At the turn of that century, the interior of the African continent was largely unknown to the American and European public. With the accounts of great explorers like Stanley, readers became thrilled by stories African expeditions and longed to follow in the footsteps of these explorers. In 1888, Stanley led an expedition to come to the aid of Mehmed Emin Pasha. The two volumes that compose In Darkest Africa; or, The Quest, Rescue, and Retreat of Emin, Governor of Equatoria are his account of what happened.
