About This Item

[Philadelphia]: [Women's Missionary Society, the United Lutheran Church in America], 1930. Fine.. Published by the Women's Missionary Society of the United Lutheran Church, this booklet contains photographs "that represent life--as our Deaconesses live it", and shows the women engaging in a wide array of work, including teaching, nursing, "reading to the shut-ins", and giving a quilting class to young people at the Lutheran Settlement House in Philadelphia. The publication identifies "more than 32,000 deaconesses in the world", including 450 in the Lutheran Church, and calls upon its female readers to answer its call: "Whether you are a teacher or a nurse, stenographer or a clerk, a social service worker, or an untrained volunteer, you may increase the influence, the satisfaction, the value of your life by enlisting ... May many more of our young women answer the Master's call and find life by losing it in joyous, unselfish service for others?" (p. [2]).

Photographically illustrated, unpaginated, [16]pp. in original printed wrappers (5.25" by 10.5").
