Ernest Hemingway's non-fiction work on bullfighting and bullfighters was born out of his travels to Pamplona, Spain during the 1920s. The matadors and toreadors had already made an appearance in The Sun Also Rises, reflecting the autobiographical character of Hemingway's fiction. Death in the Afternoon ultimately explores broader questions of life and death, fear and courage, and the symbolic relationship between the art of the bullfighters and that of the writer. 1357052.
