About This Item
Berkeley: University of California Press Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. (1981), viii, 214pp, index, illustrated. VG in VG dj. Alice James, (1848-1892), was the sister of William and Henry James. From the dj: "The only daughter of the most intellectually remarkable of American families, Alice James made of invalidism a perverse kind of vocation. She was to die of breast cancer, but for most of her adult life she was ill without a clearly nameable disease, her history marked by mysterious symptoms, baffled doctors, and obscure diagnoses. 'Getting myself dead' became for her the ironic equivalent of her famous brothers fiction and philosophy.".
