About This Item
London: Heinemann, 1957. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. Signed by Author. First UK Edition. Inscribed by the Author to the front free endpaper in the year of publication. The book is firmly and squarely bound in clean black cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt to the spine, the corners and spine ends are slightly bumped and rubbed. The text block is slightly foxed, toned and dusty, it is free from inscriptions, other than that of the author. The D/W is the original and not price-clipped, it is age toned, with minor loss, closed tears and some associated creasing. A rare find, particularly so in the attractively designed 'BB' dust wrapper, not to mention inscribed by the author. A highly-regarded crime novel with an angling setting. TOGETHER WITH: Death at the Strike (Heinemann 1957). UNCORRECTED PROOF IN PROOF D/W. The proof is in pale orange wraps and says: UNCORRECTED PROOF COPY/ (NOT FOR SALE) and is in VG (or better) condition. The proof D/W is different from that eventually used on the first edition in that it does not have the photograph of the author on the back panel; there is no price to the inside flap and the textual parts of the proof D/W use a different type-face. On the verso of the proof D/W it has been typed in red: "TO BE PUBLISHED OCT 1957 PRICE ABOUT 13-6". The proof D/W is larger than the proof itself and is inevitably slightly creased at the head of the spine. For the Pair
