Originally published in 1894, this reprint edition is part of the Time-Life Classics of the Old West series. Each volume in the series has been photographically reproduced from the original edition. The subtitle continues: ''The autobiography of a pioneer, detailing his life from a humble home in the Green Mountains to the gold mines of California; and particularly reciting the sufferings of the band of men, women and children who gave Death Valley its name.'' One of the most important books on Death Valley, and a memorable volume of reminiscences. Carl Wheat states, ''Manly tells simply but movingly of his early life in the midlands, of the trip across the Plains, including a raft voyage down the Green River, of the first white parties in Death Valley, and of experiences in the California diggings.'' Much attention is focused upon Manly's experiences in Death Valley, both initially with his party, then with Rogers as they set out alone to bring relief to the others. 'By any standard Manly has produced a memorable narrative.' (listed in: Howes, Final Edition M254; Wheat's Gold Rush Number 136; Cowan page 412; Paher's Nevada Number 1226; Zamorano Number 51). Includes the publisher's insert.
