About This Item

In Venezia, del mese di Agosto, Per li Giunti di Firenze, M D LXII., 1582. 1582 4to. [32], 585, [43] p. Recent morocco binding, the spine with raised bands and titled in the second panel. The boards panelled with multiple blind tooled rolls in the antique style. The title page with expert small paper repairs to the corners. The text block is clean and crisp, with a few signs of use. Each novella commences with a 10 line historiated initial. The scarce engraving of Salviati's approbation is present on the verso of Oo5. The first edition of the restitution and revision by Lionardo Salviati of the text of Boccaccio's Decamerone, one of two notable attempts to rescue this important work of Italian literature and the Tuscan language, which had been banned by the Church, and included in the Index librorum prohibitorum of 1559 and 1564 for its immorality, and its irreverent treatment of the clergy. Following the censure of the 1573 Accademia Fiorentina revision, Salviati prepared the second revision of 1582 at the request of Francesco de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, and Jacopo Buoncompagni, duke of Sora, and illegitimate son of Pope Gregory XIII. Cf. Tim Carter, "Another promoter of the 1582 'rassettatura' of the 'Decameron'", Modern Language Review 81 (Oct. 1986):893-899.
