About This Item
Garden City: Doubleday, 1972. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/near fine. Octavo, 512pp. A fine, crisp copy, with remainder spray to the bottom edge. In a near fine price-clipped dust ajcket, with mild edgewear. This copy SIGNED by Smith on the title page, and additionally INSCRIBED by her on the opposite leaf: "To John Alden Carras, with admiration for his place in the world of tennis, and best wishes, Margaret Chase Smith." In addition to these two signatures, there is a typed SIGNED letter on Smith's Northwood Institute letterhead dated Dec. 3, 1984 from Smith to Mr. Carras presenting the book to him. Carras seems to have been a wealthy scion of the Dow family in Midland, Michigan; we were unable to ascertain the nature of his relationship to the sport of tennis. An appealing copy of this group of letters and speeches by the pioneering Senator from Maine, who served in that office for 24 years, having previously spent ten years in the House as a Representative from Maine. The book's title comes from the title of Chase's 1950 speech on the Senate floor denouncing the behavior of Joe McCarthy.

As a small, independent bookseller in Cleveland, Ohio, I deal in general used, rare, and antiquarian books, autographs, manuscripts, pamphlets, and personal and family papers in all subjects. My family has been in the antiquarian book business since 1971. Are you moving, downsizing, or doing some spring cleaning? Did you inherit or otherwise come into some old books? Or, maybe you've collected modern novels from the last thirty or fifty years. No matter what kinds of books you have, we'd love to take a look at them! We travel throughout Ohio, western Pennsylvania and New York, southern Michigan, and eastern Indiana, and will travel farther in some cases to look at whole libraries or even just a few particularly interesting books. Give us a call at (216) 352-3940 and we can talk more about the kinds of books you have.
