The English Decorated style flourished from the mid-13th century to the mid-14th century. Usually portrayed just as a style of architecture, it is better understood as a fusion of architecture and ornament- paint, stained glass, and sculpture-to create special effects. The style was one of display primarily used in churches, but secular elements- heraldry and chivalry- were important in its appearance. This book examines it not only as an architectural style, but in the context of contemporary spiritual and secular attitudes and liturgical and political developments. Also discusses the complementary roles of craftsmen and patrons.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. Sml 4to.
