Original date of publication was November 1919, so this is not long afterwards. Henry Adams's brother Brooks Adams prepared the nearly-completed manuscript of Henry's pessimistic look at democracy for publication after Henry's death in 1918. To this he prefixed his own biographical sketch of his brother and the development of political thought in his family over the previous century, which extend over the first 122 pages.
