New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1938. First American edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. 8vo. [4], v-xviii, 1-475, [1] pp. Black cloth with gold lettering on the spine. Price of $6.00 on the front flap of the dust jacket. With the errata slip and a slip from the Archbishop of New York and the Censor of Books. Several handwritten annotations on notebook paper laid into the book, as well as the original sales receipt from a Rochester department store. Notre Dame Press, "Degrees of Knowledge". Maritain's work on epistemology. He argues there are different kinds and order of knowledge. Within these, there are different degrees determined by what it is that is to be known, and how much abstraction is to be used for knowing it. Maritain distinguishes between rational knowledge, knowledge in science and philosophy, and super-rational knowledge, or knowledge in faith and mystic matters. Foxing to the textblock and a name and bookplate on the front preliminaries; jacket is Good with a piece of the spine panel missing, a closed tear to the front panel.
