About This Item

Giovanni Cinelli Calvoli, Della biblioteca volante di Gio. Cinelli Caluoli patrizio fiorentino, e forliuese Accadem. Gelato &c. Scanzia XX. Consagrata al …Gio. Battista Conzatti, In Padova MDCCXVIII.

Ca. 16 x 11 cm; Full vellum binding; a few damp stains; otherwise, paper clean and un-toned; in very good state.".

On the inside of the cover it is stated by an old hand, that there is an autograph signature on the title by Antonio Vallisneri.

Giovanni Cinelli Calvoli was born in Florence on February 26, 16251. He studied at the University of Pisa, where one of his teachers was Evangelista Torricelli. After receiving his doctorate in philosophy and medicine, he married and returned to Florence in 1651. He collected small rare opuscules and published them by notebooks, under the title of Biblioteca volante, scanzia 1, 2, 3, 4, etc., in-8°. The author sometimes joined criticisms in note to the title of the works as in the 4th book, about a discussion between two doctors of Florence of which one, doctor of the grand duke Cosme III of Medici, accuses Cinelli of calumny, attacks him in justice and makes him condemn to withdraw the edition of this 4th book which is burned publicly by the executor of justice. Once released, Cinelli leaves Florence and his family for Venice and makes print there a writing entitled: Giustificazione di Giovanni Cinelli where he makes known his resentment. From Venice, he returned to Bologna where he was welcomed by the scholars of the Accademia dei Gelati; he went to Modena to teach the Tuscan language while practicing medicine and continued to publish the tablets and notebooks of his Bibliothèque volante. Cinelli was chosen, in 1609, by Cardinal Bichi, bishop of Ancona, to be his first physician. After the death of the prelate he continued to practice at the Holy House of Loreto where he died after a brief illness on April 18, 17061.
