About This Item

N.p.: N.p., 1963. Vintage oversize borderless photograph of a fight breaking out on the steps of the theatre hosting a French production of Rolf Hochhuth's 1963 play "The Deputy." With a printed mimeo snipe on the verso, along with the stamp of Paris Internationale agency and PIX agency.

From the archive of the PIX Agency, a photo house that acted as an intermediary between emigre photographers (as well as those still living in Europe) and the American magazine and newspaper market between 1935-1969.

Hochhuth's play examined the failure of Pope Pius XII to speak out against Nazi Germany during the Holocaust. The play debuted at the Freie Volksbuhne in West Berlin, but was soon translated and produced throughout Europe and the US. Generating a storm of controversy, the production led to conflicts and even small riots in the European cities.

Set in Vatican City and Auschwitz, Germany.

8.25 x 10.75 inches. Near Fine.
