About This Item

England: DJC Books, 1980. Hardbound. VG (Some wear to binding corners; dj may be slightly aged; interior is clean.). Blue cloth with white & color illustrated glossy dust jacket. 310 pp., 81 color and 400+ bw plates. A study of "the first hundred years of porcelain production in the ancient city of Derby. It tells the story of the old Nottingham Road China Works which commenced production about 1748-50, near to St. Mary's Bridge, giving details of successive ownerships, factory sites and biographies of many of the workforce whose skill produced the beauty, charm and craftsmanship of Derby porcelain. It is the first illustrated monograph to bring out the significance of the factory in its true position in European ceramics. Contemporary accounts of visitors are given, including those from the Continent, throwing new light on the standing and achievement of the factory and some of the celebrated pieces made there. Much material of capital importance in the history of Derby porcelain is published here for the first time including essential reports from newspapers of the period." And much more. Of great use to the collector scholar or novice. 12 chapters, index, bibliography and appendix.
