London: John Murray, Albemarle Street, 1905. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo. [4], vii-xxviii, [1], 2-398, [2] pp. Green cloth with gold rules and a gold decoration on the front board, lettering and decorations in gold on the spine; top edge gilt. Illustrated with a frontispiece of Rene Descartes. Bookplate of Henry LeRoy Finch on the free front endpaper. Swarthmore College Peace Collection, "Henry Leroy Finch Jr. (Roy Finch) Papers, 1933-1995". Finch was a professor of philosophy at Sarah Lawrence College. He was a conscientious objector during WWII, and is the father of Annie Finch, the famous feminist poet and author. A biography of perhaps the most influential modern philosopher, written by a noted Descartes scholar, Elizabeth Haldane. Haldane would also go on to release compendiums of Descartes written works. A Very Good book with foxing to the textblock and a chip to the corner of each final leaf.
