226 pp. text, including a 56-page general introduction on landscape design, with descriptions in French, German, and English, notes, index, engraved half-title of a temple among trees, title with engraved vignette of the Porte de Coucy, and 92 engraved plates with 122 numbered views, together with three engraved maps, and eight additional small engraved images with movable elements that show the same place before and after its landscape transformation. Some minor brownstaining, especially to margins. Large folio. Contemporary boards, abrasions, rubbing, bumping. Paris (Delance) 1808. One of the most important works on landscape design, with descriptions and views of the gardens of Malmaison, Morfontaine, Ermenonville, Méréville, Saint-Leu, Mousseaus, Brunehaut, Tracy, l'Ermitage du Mont-d'Or, Plessis-Chamant, Raincy, Trianon, le Desert de Monville, Guiscard, Maupertuis, le Roeulx, l'Ermitage a Versailles, Crillon, Betz, le Marais, Lormoy, Prulay, Courteille, Jouy, Bel-Oeil,Rambouillet, and a chapter on four "maisons de campagne". The engravings show the impressive gardens of these various French castles and estates, some depicting staff and other figures present in the daily life of the nobility.
The final chapter on garden theory includes engravings with overlays showing what a possible conversion to an English-style garden could look like. The engravings in this work are after Constant Bourgeois, a noted landscape painter and student of Louis David.
