About This Item

Philadelphia: Printed for private circulation, 1908 Cloth-backed portfolio, 4to (31.5 x 24.5 cm), 20 pp pamphlet, 11 plates (the paper of the covers slightly warped, the first and last pages of the pamphlet separated with the first having a small tear, foxing on one plate, a note in pencil on the front pastedown, back cover without a pastedown). This privately published description presents an uncommon account of a Book of Hours now recognized as the Da Costa Book of Hours, likely crafted around 1515 in Bruges by Simon Bening and his workshop for a member of the Portuguese Sá (Saa) family of Porto. In 1905, Quaritch published a special catalog for this manuscript and subsequently sold the book to George C. Thomas of Philadelphia, who reprinted the study. In 1910, J. Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913) acquired the book from Thomas's heir. The manuscript is currently housed in the Morgan Library as MS M.399. See also Christopher de Hamel's chapter on Bella de Costa Greene in "The Manuscripts Club."
