About This Item

Martino Publishing, Mansfield Centre, 2004 reprint of 1931 first edition. Cloth, 8vo, 24 cm,. xxxii, 466 pp, ills. From the introduction - " This catalog, besides being the record of a collection of Japanese and Chinese books, is made with two distinct purposes in view: to give side lights on the development of Japanese prints, and to show a cross-section of the history of Japanese painting in the Tokugawa period. For convenience for systematic study, the books are classified into five groups. Group I includes books of the seventeenth century, and a few examples of earlier works. .. Group II contains the works of ukiyoye artists, including those by Moronobu…Group III contains the works of popular artists whose training can be traced to the schools of Kano and Sesshu. The works of Tobaye caricaturists and of a few independent artists like Katsuma Ryusui, and Kawamura Minsetsu are also included in this group.. In Group IV are arranged the works of the artists of the Maruyama, the Shi jo, the Kishi, and the Buncho schools, and the works of the followers of modern Chinese schools, with the addition of a few original Chinese works. Group V contains miscellaneous works of reference, and some examples of modern reprints. Near Fine.
