Black cloth/boards with white lettering. Bw photographic dj with black margins and lettering. Protective plastic cover. 321 pp. with bw frontis and 12 additional bw photo illustrations. "It is believed that between 1847 and 1865, some 50,000 California Indians died. Many of these deaths were the result of simple and direct homicide; some were due to starvation and others to disease. California white men of the 1850s acted as thought their continued ixistence depended upon the total removal of the 'Indian menace.' This collection of rare primary documents provides graphic evidence of the destruction of California Indians during this period." Includes bw photos of several of the Native Americans. Contents include early records, conditions of the Indians, troop actions against the Indians, reservation matters, proposals for Indian protection and welfare, indenture, kidnapping and sale of Indians, massacres, scalping of Indians, disease, liquor and sexual exploitation of Indian women, Indian mistreatment of Chinese; Indians and the white man's law; indians as the butt of jokes.
